Arthur E. Schumacher Memorial 5K Race

On December 31, 1992, tragedy struck our small tight knit community, as Assistant Chief Arthur Schumacher of the Valley City – Liverpool Township Fire Department lost his life during a water rescue. Assistant Chief Schumacher spent his adult life serving our community.

To honor his service and his memory, the Valley City Firefighters Association set up a scholarship fund to help support our community’s firefighters further their education in the field of fire and EMS. Each year during our Street Fair, the Firefighters Association holds a 5K race/ 1 mile-fun run, with the proceeds of this event being set aside to support the Arthur E. Schumacher Scholarship Fund.

Hell on Hogsback

About

Date: Saturday, August 29, 2026

Time: 7:00am - 7:00pm

Location: Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial Hill, Cleveland, OH

Hell on Hogsback: Endurance Challenge in Cleveland, Ohio is a physical and mental test for those looking to give back in a BIG way on one of the steepest hills the area has to offer. The race is located in the Rocky River Reservation at the top of Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial Hill. The objective is simple: how many times can you complete the looped hill course within your chosen time? Will you #endureforcancer?

Update for 2026: The overall winner of the 12-Hour Endurance Challenge will win a SISU Eddy Barrel Sauna!

Course

Hell on Hogsback is a 1.1 mile looped (or what some might say...down & up) course with 140ft elevation gain & loss at an average 12% grade per loop. Starting at the top of Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial Hill, runners will head down to the bottom of the hill, take a sharp right, and continue their way down to the bottom of Hogsback Lane. At the bottom of Hogsback, runners will loop around a cone and reverse their footsteps back up Hogsback & to the top of Stinchcomb. Runners will complete their lap by completing a loop through the parking lot, upper single trail hill, and back to the parking lot where aid stations, tents, and vendors will be stationed.

Our Mission & Impact for 2026

Our internal ethos is #EndureForCancer. Through this ethos, it is our mission to raise $34,000 across 400+ registrants to positively impact 3 cancer patients who are unable to fund their surgical or medical procedure(s). After the race, the race committee will select candidates & hand-deliver checks consisting of race proceeds to the patients in need.

Donations

Those looking to give back or do not wish to participate in the event physically but want to give may do so through the Donation page. The Nelson Family Foundation (DBA Hell on Hogsback) is a registered 501(c)(3) Ohio nonprofit organization (EIN: 33-3069644). Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. All donations are non-refundable.

Cathy Fischer Memorial Walk and Run

Benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!

CATHY'S STORY

Cathy's journey with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma began in Feb 1996, six years before her official diagnosis. In
1996, she raised $3200 for LLS, possibly sensing her future battle. In Nov 2011, she developed symptoms and
underwent treatment at Cleveland Clinic from 2012 to 2013, managing chemo and hair loss. She never
complained and continued to work full time and teaching reading to underprivileged children one day a week
during her scheduled lunch. And she continued to run at least 20 to 30 miles per week.

In Dec 2013, Cathy opted for an aggressive bone cell transplant. Despite the three-week sterile procedure, she
remained active, walking the halls, spreading smiles, and resumed work and her normal physical activities, which
included running, hiking, water aerobics, and yoga,post-release.

2014 brought ups and downs. Although she did not receive any further chemo, she required periodic scans and
remained on medication for her lymphoma. Her attitude was great and Cathy managed a trip to New Hampshire,
where she hiked to the top of Mount Washington. In the fall she hiked Sedona and the Grand Canyon.

In 2018, a scan revealed aggressive lymphoma B-cells, leading to a CART T Cell procedure in Columbus for three
weeks. Cathy's resilience was evident as she exercised daily, read books, and attended events during recovery.

2019 to July 2023 involved emotional roller coasters with drug trials and chemotherapy, leading to hospital
stays. Cathy's unwavering faith, commitment to Mass, and plans for future activities showcased her courage.
Her greatest hope was to witness her eldest granddaughter’s wedding day someday.

Despite her challenging "fight," Cathy embraced life, served others, and raised thousands of dollars for LLS to
help other people. Sadly Cathy lost her fight and she symbolically transitioned from bearing her "cross" to
wearing her "crown."
